Does anyone know or have you heard of “Apple Oven Ledge”. Is it a place in Westminster or actually a ledge on the apple oven?
Locality names: Dan Axtell discovered “Apple Oven Ledge” was in Newcomb’s “pasture” off Morse Brook Rd.
In the mid 1800s it was a picnic area. Someone carved an oven in the ledge to cook in.
There were apple trees at the bottom of the pasture and may still be there.
This was the site of the formation of the first temperance society in Westminster.
These are old places that I grew up knowing. How many do you know?Dascomb Pasture—-Llly Pond—-Fenn,s Sugar lot—–Lane Swamp———-Goat Hill—Sara Davenport home–Johnson Pasture—Sweetwood—Peck place–Peter Marshal orchard–pierce,smilk shed
I only know two and a half of those places–Peter Marshall’s and the Lily Pond. And I understand that Goat Hill is where the Apple Oven Ledge was, but only know the general whereabouts of that. Where were they? What were they?
Would the little red school house that Horace Wells attended be the one on Sand Hill Road (off Rte 5) which is now long gone?
Hi Joyce,
According to a map we found in an old book, the same one that has “Apple Oven Ledge” on it, the school house was on the point of land between Andrea’s vet office and the underpass to Rt # 123 to Walpole. We had never heard of a school being there. I have found a very early reference to a school being on the hay field across from your old house on Rt 5, which was probably a forerunner to the Sand Hill School House. There also was a school house across from the Ford/Toyota Dealer on Rt 5, where the B&B is now.
Does anyone remember the Italian rubber boat company in Westminster? I have a T shirt with “Cray Energy Off Shore Racing Team” on the back. Believe it was in the 1980s, the business was located in the “most recently” Melsur building by the Red Barn on RT. 5. In the dark of night all the machinery was removed and the company disappeared with all the investors’ money.
